Cyber Bullying

Have you ever been cyber bullied? More than 20 percent of 11-18 year olds said they have been victims of cyber bullying.  Every teenager who has attended school has gone through some form of bullying.  These days teenagers also go through cyber bullying. "When I was bullied in middle school, I could go home and slam my door and forget about it for a while, Sameer Hinduja, codirector of the Cyberbullying Research Center, told The Associated Press (AP). These kids can be accessed around the clock through technology. There's really no escape."( Current Events pg.4). Cyber bullying can affects different aspects of a person life. Some people who suffer from cyber bullying can just ignore it and move on, but other people take it heart and get really hurt. Some of the victims who suffer from cyber bullying develop low self esteem, high stress and or anxiety; they don’t want to go school and can become depressed. Some victims go to the lengths of wanting to move schools and or killing themselves.  Cyber bullying is a serious issue when it is taken too far. Having been cyber bullied in the past and hearing so many stories on the news, this is something that I feel very strong about.
My sophomore year of high school I was a victim of cyber bullying. During school one day a boy made a rude comment to my group of friends and me during lunch. The boy and I got into a huge argument in the middle lunch, which was later broken up. Later that night I went on my laptop to check Facebook and I had several notifications. The boy and friends were writing on my Facebook wall calling me names and making of me. I tried defending myself but it made everything worst. The made status about me and people I don’t even know began to comment on them, making rude comments. This continued for a few weeks. I had several classes with the boy and his friends and they would always make rude comments about me in class and make fun of me. I eventually learned to ignore it and the drama died down. Those few weeks that I had to deal with the bullying were the absolute worst. Having several classes with the bullies and seeing what they wrote about me on Facebook really hurt my feelings. I didn’t understand how people can be so cruel. I began to blame myself and began to think what they were saying was true.  I eventually realized that these boys were just cruel cowards and there is nothing wrong with me. Having gone through this personally makes this topic very important to me. This helps me understand what other people are going through and makes me want to help spread awareness.

What Is Cyber Bullying and Why is it a Problem

Cyber bullying is a huge problem in the USA. The punishments for cyber bullying should be stricter to prevent these crimes from happening. Cyber bullying is harassment over the internet or cell phones targeted at minors. Bullying is something that always goes on during school. When the students go home that is where the bullying stops. With cyber bullying it continues at home. The students never get a break from the harassment. The internet and cell phones are a big part of our everyday life. A large amount of people are on social networks, like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook constantly through the day.  These social networks are one of the main areas where the cyber bullying happens. Cyber bullying also happens over texts. The bullying consist spreading rumors, posting embarrassing photo,  starting hate groups, and posting hateful things on someone’s profile. There are so many tragic results that come from cyber bullying. A lot of students become stress out and it affects their school work. According to Gale “Cyber bullying has also been linked to delinquency and violence, substance abuse, possession of weapons on school grounds, and suicide.” (Gale 2012)  Some even want to take their own life because they feel like there is no escape from the consist harassment.

Stricter punishment for those who conduct the bullying would greatly help this problem. Few of the punishments for students who are bullying people over the internet are meeting with parents and or being suspend or expel. There should be harsher punishments for these students and a better way to watch the student’s activity on social networks. For students that bully their peers and cause their victims to kill themselves there should be punishment by the school and by law enforcement. The students should be charged like adults. Teenagers can be very cruel towards their peers. The cruelty gets worse over the internet. When a person takes their own life because of someone constant cruel torture, something has to done. Stricter laws will help prevent this tragic problem. Cyber bullying needs to be stopped.
